Advance Global Health: Achieve the MDGs, UN conference, Melbourne

This is the 63rd Annual United Nations Conference for Non-Governmental Organizations. It is the biggest event in the calendar for NGOs and the UN system. There will be something like 2000 delegates from NGOs present and the exhibition centre at Southbank will hoist the UN ensign and become international territory for the duration of the conference.

Traditionally this conference is held at UN HQ in New York. The policy shifted in 2008, when the conference went ‘on the road’ and was held at UNESCO in Paris. The 2009 conference was in Mexico City and now it comes to Australia for 2010.

The theme of 2010 is health and the process it feeds into is the UN High-level Plenary Meeting, ‘Summit on the Millennium Development Goals’, 20-22 September 2010 in NY.

Protocol suggests that Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will be expected to open the Melbourne conference and then deliver its outcomes to the Summit in New York.
