The Senate non-debate on a carbon price

Australia’s Liberal-National Coalition Senators are calling for more time to debate the Clean Energy Future package yet have not proposed anything to debate.

The 18 bills of the CEF total over 1000 pages of law. The Liberal National Coalition Senators have not proposed 1 single substantive amendment to any of these bills!

Their comments are often attacks on climate science or long-winded philosophical discussions that go nowhere.

(There is actually 1 amendment, proposed by Mr Tony Abbott in the House or Representatives, which is to delay the implementation of the whole package until after the election.)

The Senate has done some analysis of the previous 2 sitting weeks, which shows how obdurate the Opposition have become. I’ve elaborated on this in a previous post.

We would benefit from an informed debate about climate policy, across the political spectrum. Australia’s conservatives should contribute to the climate debate, drawing on liberal and conservative ideas.

Unfortunately, a certain Tea Party hysteria has overcome the Liberal and National Parties and they have thus ruled themselves out of the legislative process.

Perhaps, but just wait ‘till the next election. We’ll see then how much they’ve ruled themselves out.
