New leaders rising

I am happy that one of my clients, Beyond Zero Emissions, is on the short list for two Australian environmental awards.

In Sydney this week, the clean energy industry will meet for EcoGen 2010. Matthew Wright, Executive Director of Beyond Zero Emissions, is on the short list for the EcoGen Young Industry Leader award.

BZE is also on the shortlist for the Mercedes-Benz Australian Environmental Research award, through the Banksia Foundation.

I have chosen to focus my advocacy work around small organisations like Beyond Zero Emissions because I think that they have the intellectual integrity and focused vision which we need at this point in history. Time will tell, but I bet that this gives them more potential for political, economic and cultural influence than established voices.

If you are in Melbourne, you might like to see this for yourself. BZE are part of the panel for a debate about renewable energy. Note that Dr Alan Moran of the Institute of Public Affairs will be arguing the ‘No’ case, against the switch to renewable energy.

Whichever party forms minority Government this week, I bet that climate politics over the next term of Parliament will be influenced by Beyond Zero Emissions.

Postscript

Matthew Wright and Beyond Zero Emissions won both these awards and also The Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award (which is also a Banksia).
