Drinking environmental art with Natalie Jeremijenko
Today I am excited to be attending a green art event based around molecular gastronomy, by one of my favorite environmental artists, Natalie Jeremijenko.
Cross(x)Species Adventure Club is an experiment consisting of events around the world. It was launched in New York earlier this year by Jeremijenko and molecular gastronomist Mihir Desai. We will make cocktails then serve them at a cocktail party narrated by Jeremijenko.
The Melbourne event is organised by Jodi Newcombe’s Carbon Arts programme.
Jeremijenko makes technical systems in the world, often with communities that are affected by pollution or other environmental health threats. She periodically releases feral robotic dogs into the world. They might be trained to sniff out a pollutant and then respond to its presence in the environment by making noise, sound or transmitting information.
Our planetary situation is grave but Jeremijenko’s work speaks with assurance of the clinician. Indeed, she will often wear a lab coat and her most influential art organisation is called the ‘xdesign Environmental Health Clinic’.
The creative approach and poetic use of technology offers a metaphor for our wider hopes dealing with that most pressing, dispersed pollution problem of all – climate change.
