Clean coal (CCS) continues to falter

The renewables industry is being held back globally by wishful thinking among Governments that clean coal (carbon capture and storage) will soon be viable. The myth is that coal has a great future as an energy source because it will soon be cost-effective to sequester its carbon dioxide emissions underground, for geological periods of time.

ABC recently did an excellent current affairs report about CCS for Lateline, on ABC1. The story reported that CCS is continuing to falter, as predicted.

The Federal Budget this year slashed funding for CCS programmes, which has global significance because Australia is the primary driver behind the technology. I wrote about this at the time on this blog.

Australia’s coal industry has been using CCS as its key PR foil, to prevent a carbon price and undermine renewable energy, for a decade. It is time for the rest of the media to tell the truth about CCS and then follow through with analysis of what this means economically and politically.
