Carbon Neutral Maldives 2020 report released
As the world’s diplomats prepare for the Cancun UNFCCC meeting later this month, it is a good time to remember that the only country that made a profoundly inspiring pledge at Copenhagen in 2009 was the Maldives.
The Maldives has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2020. It is important to understand that the country is under threat from sea level rise but also from Peak Oil, because its sole energy source is imported oil.
Since my work trip to the Maldives in October I have been saying that the transition from oil-dependency to energy independence is not a question of waiting for new technology, but rather the practicalities of finance and implementation.
Yesterday President Mohamed Nasheed joined Baroness Ariane de Rothschild of the Rothschild banking dynasty and Flora Bernard of the environmental consultancy firm BeCitizen to release the Maldives 2009 carbon audit. This is the first public outcome of the 2020 process.
